The SF Giants just wrapped up their home stand and are now headed to Chicago to take on the Cubs. Let's take a look at some key developments with the team and where they stand early in May.

SF Giants news: Adames, second base depth, taking on the Cubs

1. Willy Adames is getting hot

The Giants signed shortstop Willy Adames to a massive contract this offseason and there was some concern early on after he struggled at the plate. Yet, in the past week or so he has started to look like he is finding his groove.

After a solid series against the Colorado Rockies over the weekend, he is now slashing .230/.312/.363 with four home runs and 18 runs batted in. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before he began to get hot.

Even when he was struggling early on he was still contributing on offense like with his memorable walk-off hit in the team's home opener or with his opposite field power against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Through it all Adames has been a beam of optimism and energy for the team which is why the Giants felt comfortable giving him such a large contract. The fact that he is now starting to produce at the plate is going to make that contract look even better.

2. Second base depth

The Giants are having their depth tested at second base. Earlier in the season Casey Schmitt went on the IL. He was the primary backup at second base for Tyler Fitzgerald who also had to go on the IL recently with a cracked rib.

Now, the Giants will have to rely on both Christian Koss and Brett Wisely to handle second base duties. We will have to see if manager Bob Melvin decides to go with a platoon at the position or if he feels comfortable having Koss be the primary starter there for the time being.

Both players should be competent defensively at the position although neither brings a ton to the table offensively. Let's just hope the team is not forced to go any further down the depth chart at second base.

3. On to Chicago

The Giants will now embark on a six-game road trip through the Midwest. They will take on the Chicago Cubs in the first of three games tonight. Chicago is having a strong season with a record of 21-14 on the year.

Writing this from Chicago, I can assure you that spring has not fully sprung in the Windy City just yet. Monday's game should be a cool and cloudy affair that will hopefully not be impacted by any rain.

This will be a good test for the Giants early in the season. They have already impressed on the road against tough teams this season like the New York Yankees and the Phillies so this will be another good test for the Giants as they try to continue their solid start to the 2025 season.
