There is going to be a lot of trade buzz these next few days with the biggest fish of all being Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. The SF Giants have to be ready to strike after he’s dealt because the teams that miss out on him are naturally going to turn to Robbie Ray as a backup plan.
Many expect the Los Angeles Dodgers to land Skubal which wouldn’t shock anyone. Yet, there are other teams reportedly in the mix like the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays. Those teams may not have the prospect firepower to get a deal done but if they miss out on Skubal they will pivot.
Ray is coming off another great start and he’s been pitching really well as of late. His ERA is at 3.08 on the season and there are going to be a lot of teams interested in his services. He is just a rental so he’s probably not going to bring a massive haul but if the Giants pay down his remaining salary then they could get a better deal.
The Skubal situation complicates things for the Giants because it’s not a complete guarantee that Skubal will be traded. The Tigers are still alive in the playoff race so there’s a chance they hang onto him and hope they can make a playoff push the rest of the season although analysts seem to be leaning towards thinking he will be dealt.
The thing is Skubal is a free agent as well so the Tigers might feel silly if they don’t get anything for him in a trade now especially since he’s almost certainly going to depart in free agency.
Giants can afford to be patient with Robbie Ray and wait until trade deadline
There’s a chance the Giants hold onto Ray right up until the deadline, waiting for Skubal to be off the board so Ray’s asking price will go up for teams that are desperate to land a starting pitcher.
They can afford to be patient because Ray is not scheduled to start again until after the trade deadline so he cannot hurt himself pitching and tank his value entirely or anything like that. Just keep him off a scooter until Tuesday.
Everything is connected this time of year and one team’s trade can have huge ramifications for the rest of the league so the Giants are going to be watching the Skubal sweepstakes closely knowing they can capitalize if or when he gets dealt.Â
