SF Giants may have teased hilarious post-trade deadline plan at second base

The SF Giants seem quite likely to trade away their All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez in the next few days and after Casey Schmitt’s season-ending injury they may have to get a bit creative to see who will get reps at second for the rest of the season after the trade deadline.

They might have just teased the most hilarious replacement of all as Rafael Devers was seen taking some grounders at second base prior to a recent game. Now, maybe he’s just doing it for a laugh and it won’t lead to him actually playing second base in a game, but the Giants should let him play there at this point because why the heck not?

Devers probably should just be limited to first base or designated hitter duties but when the team has no shot at playoff contention and there’s a good chance the product on the field is going to be difficult to watch the next few months, it would at least provide a little entertainment value to see Devers try to play up the middle.

He has definitely grown as a first baseman over the last year. While no one would call him a natural he definitely has enough athletic ability to figure it out. He’s not as nimble or quick as a typical second baseman but he’d probably learn pretty quick and make some good plays. 

There is precedent for Giants putting unlikely players at second base

Keep in mind, Pablo Sandoval played second base for the Giants back in 2018. That is fitting because that is back when the Giants finished decidedly under .500 in three consecutive seasons like they are on pace to do this year. Why not let Devers pitch, too? We know how good Pablo was on the bump so maybe Devers has some similar magic on the mound. 

There are surely going to be some blowouts the Giants will need position players to pitch in. Plus, with the Giants likely to trade away several pitchers they may need some help covering innings the rest of the season.

That’s the tough part about seasons like this: the end is hard to watch. The good players get traded away at the deadline and while it will be fun to see some younger players get a look in the coming months, there are fewer and fewer reasons to tune into games on a daily basis when the team is so far out of it.

The Giants need little gimmicks or weird things to reward the die-hards who watch this dreadful team to the bitter end. Putting Devers at second would be like a video game developer putting some deep-cut easter eggs into a game for the sickos who want to complete it one-hundred percent.

This team is a lot of people’s identity so let’s implore manager Tony Vitello to at least give us a reason to tune in these last few months. Put Devers at second. Maybe let Lou Seal pinch hit. Throw a base at an umpire after a bad call. We aren’t asking for much, just a little entertainment value as a reward for sticking with this lousy team.
