SF Giants may be in for a nightmare as Dodgers scoop up former utility bat

Please, no.

The SF Giants moved on from utility player Tyler Fitzgerald about a month ago as they designated him for assignment. Shortly thereafter, they traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash. Now, the Blue Jays have traded Fitzgerald to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Giants fans will now collectively hold their breath as they await Fitzgerald inevitably turning into a stud with the Dodgers. It just shows how sick and twisted the Dodgers are these days. They aren't content to just win the World Series every year. They also feel the need to scoop up discarded Giants players and turn them into solid big leaguers.

They're already in the process of doing it with James Tibbs and it seems like Fitzgerald is next on the list.

Giants have to hope that Fitzgerald's 2025 struggles continue

Thankfully, Fitzgerald has looked pretty lost at the plate as of late. 2025 was a rough year for him both in the majors and in Triple-A Sacramento. He hit .217/.278/.327 for the Giants with four home runs and 14 runs batted in across 72 games. In Triple-A he hit .246/.321/.379 with six homers and 27 driven in across 54 games in the notoriously hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

He struggled in spring training this year with the Giants which is why he did not make the team. He had several guys like Casey Schmitt and Christian Koss ahead of him on the depth chart so it was always going to be an uphill battle.

Fitzgerald has just three hits in 32 Triple-A at-bats this season between the Giants and Blue Jays organizations. The Dodgers are apparently going to take a chance on him and see if they can restore him to his 2024 self.

There was a period when it looked like Fitzgerald could be a fixture of San Francisco's infield going forward back in 2024. He hit .280/.334/.497 with 15 homers and 34 runs batted in that season. Those numbers earned him the starting job at second base in 2025 but after a rib injury early on, he just never looked the same.

Fitzgerald does not have to be a great hitter to provide value to a team, though. He is really quick and can play all over the diamond so if he is just a league-average hitter then he'd be a solid utility player. The Dodgers have a way of squeezing all of the juice out of any player they acquire so it would not come as a shock if Fitzgerald ends up contributing for the Dodgers at some point this season.

It also wouldn't be a shock if former Giants executive Farhan Zaidi, who is now back with the Dodgers as an adviser, had a role in this move. He saw Fitzgerald at his best so he knows what the 28-year-old is capable of.

Let's just hope he doesn't become a Giants-killer in LA because that would be an absolute nightmare outcome.
