The SF Giants have been connected to free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker, but after the New York Mets swung a big trade they may be in the market for an outfielder as well. Can the Giants keep up with Steve Cohen's deep pockets?

New York sent outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for second baseman Marcus Semien. Now, the Mets have a hole in their outfield that they may try to fill by signing Tucker who is the top free agent on the market.

SF Giants may have more competition for Kyle Tucker after Mets trade

Last offseason, the Mets signed the best free agent on the market in Juan Soto. They ultimately had an embarrassing collapse in the 2025 season that almost let the Giants sneak into the playoffs, but maybe they will try to double down and add another big bat this offseason.

Thankfully, the Dodgers have seemed to fade a bit in the Tucker sweepstakes. They are still a threat until the ink is dry on a contract with a different team, but as long as Tucker stays off LA a lot of Giants fans would be pleased with that outcome.

While there is certainly a case to be made for the Giants to make a run at Tucker, it does not exactly seem like they are gearing up for a big push for his services. Instead, they have made more minor depth moves by adding solid defensive depth pieces in the outfield like Justin Dean and Joey Wiemer.

The Giants may decide to sign a less expensive option to play right field like Randal Grichuk or maybe they will opt for a platoon approach in right with Wiemer and someone like Drew Gilbert sharing time out there.

Obviously, pitching is going to be San Francisco's biggest point of emphasis this offseason but that does not mean the other holes on their team do not matter. If the Giants want to stay afloat in a National League West where there are two teams clearly ahead of them right now, they are going to have to make quite a few additions but it remains to be seen if the Giants are willing to do that as president of baseball operations Buster Posey has emphasized internal improvements.

Tucker going to the Giants has always seemed unlikely, but the fact that the Mets may be players in the Tucker sweepstakes only makes it seem more unlikely that they will land the left-handed slugger.
