SF Giants injury news: Jerar Encarnación return, Carson Whisenhunt close, and Landen Roupp update

Jerar Encarnación nearing a return

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Encarnación would begin a rehab assignment this weekend. He was in the lineup for the Sacramento River Cats on Friday night. It has been a tough season for the power bat, as he has spent much of the year on the injured list.

The latest injury was a Grade 2 hamstring that Encarnación suffered in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in early August. The recovery timeline usually ranges from four to six weeks, and he is right on track to return around that time, assuming all goes well with his rehab assignment.

Encarnación was starting to heat up at the plate prior to the injury. He registered home runs in consecutive games before sustaining the hamstring injury. Overall, he has five hits in 30 at-bats with the Giants this season.

Carson Whisenhunt is close

Slusser also notes that Carson Whisenhunt could be close to a return as well. At the end of August, he was placed on the injured list with a mild back strain.

It is unknown if he will need a rehab assignment. The Giants might feel comfortable without him needing one since he pitched in a game at the end of August. The Giants' pitching prospect has recorded a 5.01 ERA with 16 strikeouts and 12 walks in 23.1 frames with San Francisco this season. He has also been prone to the long ball, with six home runs allowed.

Landen Roupp update

Lastly, Slusser speculates that Landen Roupp's season could be done. The right-handed hurler suffered a bone bruise after a batted ball deflected off of his leg. At the time, the injury looked more serious, but it being listed as a bone bruise is an encouraging update.

Overall, it was a promising campaign for Roupp. He pitched to a 3.80 ERA, 3.92 FIP, 1.48 WHIP, 8.6 K/9, and a 2.27 SO/W rate across 106.2 innings with the Giants. Roupp had a 3.11 ERA through his first 20 starts of the season, but had a bout of elbow inflammation and struggled in his last two outings upon his return. Regardless, he will enter next spring with a strong hold on a rotation spot.
