Last week, the Richmond Flying Squirrels announced its coaching staff. They are returning most of the same staff from last season, with one notable change. Former A's first baseman Tommy Everidge is taking over as the hitting coach for the SF Giants Double-A affiliate.

Dennis Pelfrey will be entering his fifth season as the manager for the Flying Squirrels. The same is true for Paul Oseguera, who is serving as the pitching coach. Lipso Nava is also returning as the fundamentals coach.

The Flying Squirrels came in last place in the Southwest Division of the Eastern League with a 56-79 record in 2025. That can be a difficult affiliate to manage, as prospects often do not spend a lot of time with Richmond.

The Eastern League has also proven to be a good litmus test for Giants prospects. The more advanced pitching, cold and wet climate, and expansive ballpark dimensions make it a tough challenge for power hitters.

Pelfrey played in independent ball for several seasons in the early 2000's. He transitioned to coaching after his playing career concluded. He managed the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League for five seasons before joining the Giants organization as the manager of the Eugene Emeralds. The Emeralds won the Northwest League in his lone season with Eugene.

Since then, Pelfrey has managed Richmond. His coaching staff will have a different look, with Tommy Everidge taking over as the hitting coach. He is replacing Cory Elasik, who had served in that role for three seasons.

Everidge was a 10th-round pick by the A's in 2004 out of Sonoma State University. He appeared in one season with Oakland and posted a .667 OPS with two home runs and seven RBI in 97 plate appearances.

The right-handed hitter's playing career came to an end after the 2012 season. By that point, he had been playing in independent ball. Since then, Everidge has served as a hitting coach in a handful of different capacities. This includes a stint as the hitting coach for the A's in 2022 and 2023.

Over the past couple of seasons, Everidge has worked as a hitting coordinator and assistant hitting coach in the Washington Nationals organization. In 2025, he served as an assistant hitting coach for their High-A affiliate.
