SF Giants have the slugger Blue Jays desperately need to save their lineup

Both sides need to make this move.

If the SF Giants are indeed open to trading away their bad contracts, Rafael Devers could potentially be on the move. A year after the Giants swung a blockbuster trade for him with the Boston Red Sox it has been astounding to see how bad the team has done with him on the team.

Devers is not entirely to blame for that, but with the Giants having an awful year they have to be wondering if they really want to have Devers around until 2033.

It will not be easy to trade Devers no matter what. The Giants are going to have to eat money in any sort of deal but a team that desperately needs a slugger could come calling which is why the Toronto Blue Jays are an interesting team to watch.

The Blue Jays got off to a brutal start to the season but they have turned things around. Toronto is now 35-38 on the season and is one game out of a Wild Card spot in the American League. After the Blue Jays made it to the World Series last year and splurged in the offseason they are clearly in win-now mode so trading for Devers is a move they might be interested in making.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan recently looked at where all 30 MLB teams stand ahead of the trade deadline and noted that the Blue Jays could really use a hitter who gets a lot of extra base hits. That has been missing from Toronto’s lineup and Devers still has some thump in his bat as evidenced by his hot May even if his overall slash line of .235/.295/.421 leaves a lot to be desired.

Devers is the slugger Toronto needs to contend

Devers obviously has a lot of familiarity with the Blue Jays after spending so many years in the American League East with the Red Sox. In his career playing at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Devers has hit .318/.392/.587 with 12 home runs and 33 runs batted in across 47 games.

It may seem like an imperfect fit since the Blue Jays already have a set first baseman in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and a regular designated hitter in George Springer. If the Blue Jays did trade for Devers, Springer would likely have to play one of the corner outfield spots and Devers could become the DH.

Springer is going to be a free agent after this season though so going forward Devers could be Toronto’s everyday DH or split time with Guerrero at first base.

If the Giants are looking for a way out of Devers’ deal, Toronto is probably their best hope. It will still take a lot to get a deal done but the Blue Jays have a need for a hitter and the Giants may have a desire to get rid of a bad contract so maybe both sides can work something out.
