SF Giants have no other choice than to bring back Buster Posey and Tony Vitello

In a season where the SF Giants are on track to have one of the worst records in the history of the franchise, that would typically mean some firings are coming both with the coaching staff and the front office. But San Francisco is in a unique position where both president of baseball operations Buster Posey and manager Tony Vitello have job security.

For Posey, it’s because he is a franchise legend and if the Giants got rid of him then it would really throw things into disarray. They’re clearly content to let him learn and grow in this job so things would probably have to really go sideways for ownership to fire him. The likeliest way for him to leave would be for him to resign.

For Vitello, he is Posey’s guy. He was hired by Posey because he felt the Giants needed to shake things up and an unorthodox hire of a guy straight from the college ranks indeed did shake things up, just not how Posey was intending.

Even though things have gone poorly and it’s been fair to question Vitello’s abilities as a big league manager, Posey has already affirmed multiple times that Vitello will be back next season. He knows that to fire him after just one season would be a terrible look so he’s betting that things will improve the next few years and Vitello will, like him, grow into the job.

The only way Vitello might leave is if a nice opening in college opened up, but he seems committed to seeing things through. He likely doesn’t want to be known as the guy who jumped ship after one year so expect him to get at least one more year with the Giants and if things get better he will probably come back for a third.

Giants are stuck with both Buster Posey and Tony Vitello for now

While saving face may not seem like the best reason to retain someone, there’s reason to believe both Posey and Vitello can grow together. Posey has made good moves whether it be trades or draft decisions and he’s certainly acted boldly and decisively. Vitello has shown a bit more fire as of late and players may have more familiarity and respect for him in year two. 

If 2027 winds up being a repeat of 2026 or, gulp, even worse, then some really big changes are going to be made. But the Giants aren’t going to pull the plug on Posey and Vitello after taking a huge swing on both of them so Posey has no choice but to bring back Vitello and the Giants have no choice but to hope things improve under Posey otherwise they have to blow things up again.

Many angry Giants fans understandably want to see change, but don't expect to see a major shakeup to either the leader of the front office or the ostensible leader of the dugout in the offseason.
