The SF Giants are not doing much to add to the roster right now. Part of that may have to do with the fact the team already has three players locked up long-term on contracts that certainly have the potential to age very poorly.
For the rest of the decade, the Giants will have third baseman Matt Chapman, shortstop Willy Adames, and first baseman Rafael Devers under contract. All three players are 29 or older and each is owed a lot of money.
SF Giants may come to regret three massive contracts
Obviously, for a long time the Giants were tarred as the team that was unable to lock up free agents to big deals. They have shaken that reputation a little bit in recent years as they were able to keep Chapman on a six-year extension worth $151 million and they signed Adames to the richest contract in franchise history at seven years and $182 million.
Then, the blockbuster trade for Devers meant that the Giants would take on the rest of the ten-year $313.5 million deal he signed with the Boston Red Sox in 2023.
That is a lot of money tied up in three players who are solid, but are not superstars by any stretch. All three are still in their prime and capable of being All-Stars, but in three or four years it would not be surprising if they were on the injured list more often or regressing at the plate. Some, like Adames, might have to be moved to a different position.
Arguably, the Giants had to start making moves like this. Now, the question will be whether the front office took a chance on the right guys. Free agency can always be a crap shoot and the Giants got decent results from the trio in 2025, but Adames had a brutal first half, Chapman was banged up a lot, and Devers had much better numbers with the Red Sox.
Maybe 2026 is the year they put all the pieces together, but the Giants are going to need these three guys to click while they are all still in their prime. If they do, the Giants should be well-positioned to make the playoffs. But if they don't, one will have to wonder if the front office was wise to roll the dice on these three.
Making aggressive moves carries risk and Buster Posey deserves credit for being bold, but boldness does not always lead to results and can, in fact, lead to some regrets later on.
