The SF Giants have rounded out the starting rotation with the additions of Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle this offseason. That may be the last moves they make to this unit, as Buster Posey told John Shea of The San Francisco Standard that they are "happy with our rotation right now."

Posey left the door open for the Giants to make another move, but it sounds unlikely at this point. Following the Houser signing, Zack Minasian shared a similar sentiment, but it was clear that the Giants still had one rotation vacancy at that point.

That no longer appears to be the case. The Giants have four pitchers under contract for 2026, including Houser, Mahle, Robbie Ray, and Logan Webb. Plus, Landen Roupp is looking to build off a promising second season with the Giants that ended prematurely due to a knee injury.

The Giants have some volume concerns behind Webb and Ray. Houser has never thrown more than 142.1 innings in a season, and Mahle has made just 24 starts over the past three years. Roupp completed 106.2 innings in 2025, which was the most innings he has thrown as a pro since he tallied 107.1 frames across three minor league levels in 2022.

The Giants will need to find a way to fill these gaps when they inevitably pop up. Hayden Birdsong, Trevor McDonald, and Blade Tidwell will be among the options to slot into place in the event of injuries or underperformance.

They have invested a lot of money into the starting rotation. At this point, there is probably no more room for another addition. There could be an exception to this. The Giants could still bring in a pitcher returning from injury on a low-value, prove-it deal.

Perhaps, it will not be someone that they expect to make 32 starts in 2026, but someone who might be ready later in the year. That is usually when teams need to lean on depth to get them to the finish line.

In recent days, the Giants have been connected to Framber Valdez. Héctor Gómez of Z101 Digital reported that talks between the southpaw pitcher and the Giants were intensifying. When talks intensify, that usually has a specific meaning that contract talks have become exclusive and that a deal is imminent.

Since then, there has not been much traction on that report. The addition of someone like Valdez would change the dynamic of the rotation. However, if Buster Posey's perspective on where the rotation is at is to be taken at face value, the Giants may not be as involved as originally reported. They rounded out the rotation, and seem to be content in beginning the year with the current group.
