SF Giants' fleecing of Padres is complete as Robbie Ray helps end San Diego's season

A smart trade by the Giants.

The San Diego Padres have been eliminated from the playoffs after their loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night. Robbie Ray took the loss for San Diego which is just the final nail in the coffin and shows how thoroughly the Giants fleeced the Padres in that trade.

The Giants dealt Ray to San Diego at the trade deadline because he is going to be a free agent after this season and he was one of their more valuable trade chips. Ray went on to have a 5.02 ERA in nine starts with the Padres and then gave up two earned runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work in Game 1 of the NLDS against Milwaukee. The Padres tried using him as a reliever in Game 4 but it didn’t go much better as Ray allowed one earned run in one inning to break the tie and the Brewers never relinquished the lead.

So in essence the Giants gave the Padres a couple months of Ray who ended up being a disappointment in exchange for two prospects, Miguel Mendez and Joniel Hernandez, who could be a part of San Francisco’s future or maybe they could be used as trade chips in some future trade.

That’s a pretty solid fleecing for San Francisco. Two solid prospects in exchange for a guy who ends up hurting a division rival that has sort of owned you think entire decade. Not bad at all. After the Camilo Doval trade Buster Posey is really showing that he can take advantage of other teams when his is doing poorly so we at least have to give him that.

Robbie Ray's future uncertain after Padres playoff exit

It will be interesting to see what happens next for Ray. He’s 35 years old and while he’s not completely broken by any stretch as evidenced by the respectable numbers he put up for San Francisco prior to being traded, it seems unlikely he will earn a huge contract in free agency.

A reunion with San Francisco or San Diego feels unlikely at this point. The Giants ideally want younger options with a bit more upside and bringing back a familiar face probably wouldn’t do much to improve fan confidence going into next season.

Ray was a solid Giant and while it would have been fine to see him pitch well for the Padres, it didn’t hurt to see him hasten their demise in the playoffs. The Padres are obviously better than the Los Angeles Dodgers but they’re still a rival so it feels unnatural to pull for them.

The Milwaukee Brewers will be much easier to cheer for in the NLCS against the Dodgers so let’s hope they put up more of a fight than they did last season. No matter what, at least the Giants look even smarter for the Ray trade right now.
