The Miami Marlins are listening in on trade offers for young hurler Edward Cabrera. Could the SF Giants strike a surprise trade?
SF Giants, Cubs, and Yankees among teams to check in on young Marlins hurler
Jon Heyman of The New York Post reports that the Giants are among the teams that have checked in on Cabrera. He mentions the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs as other potential suitors.
The 27-year-old pitcher is coming off a strong season with Miami. He pitched to a 3.53 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 1.22 WHIP, 9.8 K/9, and a 3.13 SO/W rate across 137.2 innings. The innings total marked a career high and represented the first time he crossed 100 innings since he debuted in 2021.
Cabrera had been slowed by shoulder and elbow ailments in recent seasons. This includes landing on the injured list near the end of the 2025 campaign due to an elbow sprain. He did return to make two more starts to finish out the season.
The right-handed pitcher qualified for Super 2 status last offseason, meaning that he reached arbitration one season early. He earned $1.95 million in 2025, and is projected to earn $3.7 million in 2026.
That is a bargain rate for a pitcher who offers quality upside. Despite Cabrera’s career 4.07 ERA, the Marlins will be looking to sell high in trade talks. It helps that he has three years of team control remaining, which holds a lot of value. It also means that Miami has some leverage in that there is no rush to strike a deal.
The Marlins will likely be asking for two top prospects to swing a trade. For the Giants, that would be a bitter pill to swallow and would probably include one of Bryce Eldridge or Josuar Gonzalez. That would be a painful cost, but it is often the price of trading for young players under team control.
The Giants seemingly rounded out the rotation after adding Tyler Mahle. He will join Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Landen Roupp, and Adrian Houser. Outside of Webb and Ray, the Giants are light on volume and will likely need to fill the gaps with their younger pitchers.
Adding a starter of Cabrera’s caliber would certainly raise the ceiling of that unit, but the volume issues would still remain. They will have some stiff competition for the young Marlins pitcher.
