SF Giants could swap bad contracts with these 3 teams at the trade deadline

This would mean they'd have to send less money.

The SF Giants reportedly have interest in getting rid of three of their bad contracts ahead of the trade deadline, namely Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, and Rafael Devers. That will be much easier said than done, but one way the Giants can do it is by finding other teams that have bad contracts they’d like to move off of.

That would be beneficial for San Francisco because it would mean they’d have to send less money as part of any deal but obviously it would have the drawback of replacing one problem with another problem.

It is probably the only way to get a deal done though so let’s look at three teams with bad contracts who may want to swap with the Giants.

Giants need to take on bad contracts in order to get rid of theirs

Atlanta Braves

The Giants have seen the Braves a lot lately and it’s pretty obvious they could use a shortstop. Adames has taken a lot of heat this year but he is a huge improvement over Ha-Seong Kim who has really struggled in Atlanta.

Kim is hitting .068/.171/.068 in 26 games on the season. He’s been banged up but the Braves have to feel really silly giving him a one-year, $20 million deal in the offseason.

The Giants can trade Adames to Atlanta in exchange for Kim and maybe a prospect or two. They’d have to throw in money as part of the deal since Adames is under contract until 2031 but inheriting Kim would make it hurt a little less.

At least Kim could reunite briefly with his good friend Jung Hoo Lee and the Giants wouldn’t owe him anything beyond this season.

New York Yankees

Chapman’s preference is to stay on the West Coast if possible, but the best trade fits for him are out east. The New York Yankees would be an obvious trade partner since they could use an upgrade at third base with Ryan McMahon struggling there.

He’s hitting .210/.269/.360 with eight homers and 23 runs driven in. If the Giants swapped Chapman for McMahon, a few prospects, and some cash that could potentially get a deal done.

McMahon is owed $16 million next year so maybe the Giants would keep him or they could try to flip him in the offseason.

New York Mets

Buster Olney of ESPN already proposed a salary swap trade between the Giants and Mets that would send Adames to New York in exchange for Marcus Semien. That could work, but the Mets already have Francisco Lindor at short so maybe Rafael Devers would be a better fit since he plays first and the Mets don’t have a clear first baseman.

Devers could go to the Mets in exchange for Semien who is still owed $46 million over the next two seasons while hitting .214/.271/.341 on the year. Having Semien for two years would be preferable to having Devers until the 2030s so that may be a smart swap even though the Giants would have to send money as part of that deal too.

Any of these trades would be hard to get across the finish line but if the Giants really want to move off their big contracts they’ll probably have to eat money and take on one of that team’s bad contracts in order to make it work.
