The SF Giants have not had a Cy Young winner since Tim Lincecum won the award in back-to-back seasons in 2008 and 2009. The 2025 season could break that drought since the Giants already have an ace on their staff and could add another.
It is a little hard to believe, but since the move to San Francisco in 1958, only two Giants pitchers have won the NL Cy Young Award. Mike McCormick did it back in 1967, and then Lincecum did it twice in 2008 and 2009.
It has been 15 years since the Giants have had a Cy Young Award winner, but perhaps that could change in 2025. Current staff ace Logan Webb has come close before. He was the runner-up to Blake Snell in 2023 so he certainly has the potential to get the job done.
Logan Webb could be first SF Giants Cy Young winner since Lincecum
Webb has been remarkably consistent for the Giants the past four seasons. He has been an absolute workhorse, throwing 192 innings or more each of the last three seasons and leading the league in innings pitched each of the past two years.
In order for him to win the award, he would probably have to throw 200 innings or more and have an ERA under 3.00. He did that in 2022 and finished 11th in Cy Young voting, but perhaps he is more well known amongst voters now and would get more respect.
Plus, it stands to reason that Webb will have a lower ERA than the 3.47 he posted last season. As a sinkerballer who induces a ton of ground balls, it is going to help that the infield is much more solid going into 2025. Having two premium defenders on the left side of the infield in Matt Chapman at third base and Willy Adames at shortstop will help Webb out a lot, and Tyler Fitzgerald should be solid at second base as should LaMonte Wade Jr. at first.
It is also worth noting that the Giants have been connected to a free agent pitcher who has won a Cy Young Award in the past.
Corbin Burnes is another candidate to break the drought (if he signs with the SF Giants)
Corbin Burnes has been connected to the Giants for a bit in free agency. It is going to cost a lot of money to land him, but it could be worth it to give San Francisco a formidable one-two punch at the top of the rotation.
Burnes won the Cy Young in 2021 as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers and has been an All-Star each of the past four seasons. He would no doubt benefit from the pitcher-friendly confines of Oracle Park which could help him keep his ERA low if he were to come to San Francisco.
In a perfect world, the Giants sign Burnes and he and Webb have a duel all season for the Cy Young Award, finishing 1st and 2nd. Yet, no matter what happens, the Giants have a pitcher with Cy Young potential in Webb and are heavily connected to a guy who has won one in the past. That definitely makes it seem like a real possibility that the Giants could have their first Cy Young winner since Lincecum next season.
