The SF Giants have a number of needs this offseason and addressing right field is going to be one of them. That is why they should pursue a deal with right-handed slugger Randal Grichuk as a sort of reclamation project for 2026.
Pitching is obviously going to take precedence for the Giants this offseason, but there are still holes in the lineup or positions they could upgrade. Right field is the most glaring hole right now after the Giants traded away Mike Yastrzemski during the 2025 season.
SF Giants should sign Randal Grichuk to fill hole in right field
The Giants were connected to Grichuk last offseason, but he ultimately decided to re-sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks which was probably for the best because things might have been crowded with him, Yastrzemski, and the younger outfielders competing for playing time.
Ultimately, Yastrzemski and Grichuk did end up on the same team as both were dealt to the Kansas City Royals in the middle of the season.
Grichuk's overall numbers were not great as he slashed .228/.273/.401 with nine home runs and 27 runs batted in. His numbers in Kansas City brought down his overall numbers, but he is just one year removed from a very solid campaign in 2024 with Arizona in which he slashed .291/.348/.528 with 12 homers and 46 runs batted in.
Maybe Grichuk would not be able to put up those kind of numbers playing at Oracle Park, but it stands to reason he can bounce back from a bit of a rough 2025 season because he did the same thing in 2023 after he was traded midseason and struggled with his new team before following it up with a very nice 2024.
Signing Grichuk is a far cry from the team making a real run at Kyle Tucker, but with most of the team's resources likely going towards pitching this offseason, they will probably have to be frugal with any additions to the lineup.
The Giants could get Grichuk on an affordable one-year contract and have him begin the year as the team's starting right fielder. They could also have someone like Drew Gilbert or Luis Matos behind him on the depth chart challenging him for playing time if he struggles.
It would not be the sexiest offseason signing, but it would at least make the Giants feel a little better about where they stand in right field going into next season.
