The MLB Draft is coming up this weekend for the SF Giants and understandably a lot of attention has been placed on the No. 4 overall pick. The team has drafted some truly franchise-altering players in the top five of the draft in the past, but the rest of the draft matters a ton as well.
What the Giants do after Round 1 is obviously incredibly important and they have a chance to select the nephew of an all-time great Giant.
Peyton Bonds is the nephew of Barry Bonds and the son of Bobby Bonds Jr. who played in the minors with the Giants. He is projected to go in the mid-to-late rounds. He is not quite viewed as a consensus top-100 talent but he’s viewed favorably by most analysts. Keith Law of The Athletic recently noted that he has great exit velocity and a solid contact rate and has above average speed even though he can get a bit swing-happy at times.
He doesn’t quite have the home run pop of his uncle but his numbers last season at Rutgers are more than respectable. He hit .352/.436/.535 with six home runs and 29 runs batted in along with 13 stolen bases. He struck out 21 times and drew 16 walks in 36 games played.
The soon-to-be 21-year-old Bonds stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 225 pounds. He bats and throws right handed and could be an interesting outfield option down the road if the Giants were to select him.
It may be fate if the SF Giants draft Barry Bonds' nephew
ESPN ranks him as the No. 118 overall ranked prospect in the draft and the Giants just so happen to hold the No. 118 pick in the draft in Round 4. Coincidence? MLB has him as the No. 81 overall prospect and the Giants hold the No. 90 overall pick in the third round so maybe they could get him then too.
Obviously the Giants shouldn’t only draft him because of his name and his uncle, but of you take the name away he fits the profile of the type of player the Giants have targeted under the Buster Posey-led front office. He’s got some speed and makes contact at a high rate and it’s easy to see that style of play translating well in Oracle Park.
Perhaps in some dream scenario the Giants draft Bonds and then a few weeks later they swing a trade with the New York Yankees for prospect Kaeden Kent, the son of Jeff Kent. Then, five years from now Bonds and Kent get in a spat in the dugout to pay homage to their uncle and father respectively.Â
It would be awesome to have another Bonds in the organization so this almost feels like too good an opportunity to pass up. If Bonds is still available when the Giants pick in rounds 3-5 they should draft him and see if that family can provide another great player to the franchise.Â
