SF Giants call up Nate Furman for major league debt, send versatile catcher to the injured list

The SF Giants made a roster move ahead of Saturday's game against the San Diego Padres. They called up Nate Furman for his major league debut. In a corresponding move, Jesús Rodríguez was placed on the injured list with right elbow neuritis.

If you watched Saturday's game, you probably noticed the painful series of events that took place at the end of the game. The Giants got walked off against the Padres to drop the series. That was not the most painful part. They have been walked off a lot this season.

About a minute after the game concluded, news dropped that the Los Angeles Dodgers were acquiring two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, per Jeff Passan of ESPN. That was a great way to ruin a Saturday night!

Nevertheless, the Giants still have some season left to play, and Nate Furman could get a look at second base. They originally acquired him in 2024 in a deal that sent Alex Cobb to the Cleveland Guardians. They also added Jacob Bresnahan, who has emerged as one of the top pitching prospects in the system.

Cobb did not pitch for the Giants in 2024. He was recovering from offseason hip surgery at the time of the deal. He made three appearances for the Guardians, posting a 2.76 ERA across 16.1 frames.

Furman was injured at the time of the deal as well and did not make his debut with the Giants organization until the middle of last season. He finished last season with a brief stint in Double-A and spent this year with the Sacramento River Cats.

Nate Furman brings a high at-bat quality to the table for the SF Giants

The left-handed bat has posted a .284/.370/.405 line (107 wRC+) with seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 57 runs in 434 plate appearances. This includes an 11.1 percent walk rate, 12.4 percent strikeout rate, and .122 ISO. He also swiped 18 bases in 23 chances.

Furman grinds out at-bats. He is a patient hitter and does a nice job of staying in the strike zone. Perhaps, he is even too passive at the plate at times. That said, he has near-elite contact skills, with a 93 percent contact rate.

Furman works deep counts and puts a lot of balls in play. The Giants need to get back to making pitchers work, and Furman helps in that regard. He does not have much in the way of power. His offensive value will be tied to his ability to reach base. That said, he pulls the ball in the air at a decent rate, so he will hit for some extra bases.

In the field, the 25-year-old infielder has good range at second base. He has below-average arm strength, so he will likely be limited to the right side of the infield. Furman is also an above-average runner, and has generally been an efficient base stealer.

On the other side of the transaction, Jesús Rodríguez landed on the injured list. He had a .728 OPS with two home runs and eight RBI in 58 plate appearances.
