The biggest question entering the Winter Meetings for the SF Giants was whether they were really entertaining trading their top prospect Bryce Eldridge. They have held onto him for now and Giants broadcaster Dave Flemming does not see them trading him.
Flemming appeared on KNBR and was asked about the idea of the Giants trading Eldridge and he had the following to say:
“I don’t think they want to trade Bryce Eldridge, I don’t…I’m pretty bullish on him…I think Tony and the new staff are really excited to work with him and see what they can get out of him."
SF Giants broadcaster Dave Flemming doesn’t think team will trade Bryce Eldridge
Obviously, Flemming likely does not have any inside knowledge here, he is just sharing his opinion but he may very well be right that the Giants are not that intent upon trading Eldridge even though general manager Zack Minasian recently said there are no untouchables in trade talks.
President of baseball operations Buster Posey also said of Eldridge: “I think he's got a chance to be one of the biggest impact bats for the next 10 to 15 years in the big leagues, potentially. We'll listen, but we like him a lot."
Some like former Giants first baseman J.T. Snow have warned the Giants that talking so openly about listening to offers for Eldridge could backfire if he feels the organization is not that high on him and is actively entertaining the idea of trading him.
It does not seem like the Giants are shopping him around, but they do seem to be keeping their options open especially since reports have suggested ownership does not want the team to spend big on a free agent pitcher.
Trading Eldridge could be the only way to get an ace-level arm in the rotation for the Giants so they should be listening to offers just so they have options.
Still, they would probably have to be blown away by an offer to actually go through with it. Eldridge does seem to have a very high ceiling and could be a high-impact bat for many years to come.
At the same time, one cannot look at recent top prospects like Joey Bart and Marco Luciano and wonder whether it may be better to trade Eldridge now while he has value rather than watch his value depreciate to nothing like it did with Bart and Luciano.
Flemming is probably right that the Giants will not trade Eldridge this offseason, but the team is clearly keeping its options open.
