SF Giants beat writer speculates that the club could trade 2024 All-Star at deadline

Could Heliot Ramos be on the move? Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle joined KNBR on Tuesday, hinting that the SF Giants could look to trade the former All-Star outfielder.

The MLB trade deadline is less than a week away. The Giants will look to move all of their players on expiring contracts. This includes Robbie Ray, Luis Arráez, Tyler Mahle, and JT Brubaker.

They could expand that group by making controllable players available as well. This would include names like Ramos, Caleb Kilian, and Keaton Winn. Jung Hoo Lee could be moved as well, but there are a couple of obstacles that would reduce his market.

After a 45-61 start, everything has to be on the table for the Giants. They are not winning with their current group of players.

The right-handed bat would garner some interest given that he is controllable beyond this season. He will be eligible for arbitration in the offseason, so he is due for a raise. He would not be a free agent until after the 2029 season.

Ramos has been a reliable source of power since he became an everyday player in 2024. This season has been a continuation of that trend, as he has slashed .258/.294/.432 (98 wRC+) with nine home runs, 31 RBI, and 34 runs in 279 plate appearances. This includes a 4.7 percent walk rate, 27.2 percent strikeout rate, and .174 ISO.

The SF Giants should be able to net a decent prospect in return for Heliot Ramos

While his power numbers remain healthy, there has been a brutal decline in his walk rate. His sub-.300 on-base percentage has weighed down his overall offensive value. This has coincided with an increase in strikeouts as well.

Ramos graded out as one of the worst defenders in baseball last season. There has been a notable improvement this year, but he still is a below-average left fielder.

Since the start of 2025, the 26-year-old outfielder has been worth 1.6 fWAR. That is a quality mark, but there is room for improvement. It also means that he may not generate a huge return, but they should be able to net a decent prospect in a trade. That said, Ramos should hold appeal to a team that needs a little more offense in the outfield.

The Giants ought to be open to dealing Ramos. As a unit, the outfield has ranked in the bottom third in both wRC+ and fWAR in recent seasons. There is not much opportunity to trade from the infield group, but there is a chance to move some of their outfielders and start over. That could begin with Ramos before the trade deadline.
