SF Giants are quickly running out of jersey numbers in the 20's

Someday there may not be a Giants player wearing a number in the twenties.

With the news that the SF Giants will be retiring the No. 21 to honor second baseman Jeff Kent's induction into the Hall of Fame, the team is quickly running out of numbers in the 20's that it will be able to issue to future players.

After 21 gets retired, there are only three numbers in the 20's that will be able to be worn by future players. Let's take a look at all the jersey numbers in the 20's that have either already been retired or will one day be retired.

SF Giants are running out of jersey numbers in the 20's

No. 20: Monte Irvin

The Giants retired Monte Irvin's number in 2010 to honor his Hall of Fame career as well as the fact that he was the first Black player in Giants history.

No. 21: Jeff Kent

Kent was elected to the Hall late last year and he is still arguably the best offensive second baseman in MLB history. He was the NL MVP in 2000, the inaugural season of Giants baseball at Oracle, then Pac Bell, Park and was a key part of those great Giants teams in the late 90's and early 2000's.

No. 22: Will Clark

Clark's number was retired, fittingly, in 2022. While Clark is not in the Hall of Fame, he is a huge part of Giants history and played a key role in turning the franchise around after some lean years in the 1980's.

Also, Clark was my Dad's favorite player and today is his birthday. Happy birthday, Dad!

No. 24: Willie Mays

The greatest Giant, and the greatest ballplayer, to ever live, Willie Mays had his number retired after he finished playing and the only time any Giant has worn 24 since was when every Giants player wore it after Mays' passing in 2024.

And a shoutout to my Grandpa whose favorite player was Willie Mays. It's not his birthday but hey, Gramps!

No. 25: Barry Bonds

Bonds has erroneously been excluded from the Hall of Fame, but he is still the home run king and the greatest hitter to ever play the game. He was the first non-Hall of Fame player to receiver the honor from the Giants.

Because why not, growing up Bonds was my favorite player and is probably a huge reason why I am such a big Giants fan.

No. 27: Juan Marichal

One of the best pitchers in the history of the organization, Marichal had his number retired in 1975 after an illustrious career.

No. 28: Buster Posey

Posey's number is not yet retired, but no player has worn it since he retired after the 2021 season and he will surely have it retired following his all but certain induction into the Hall of Fame.

No. 29: Jeff Samardzija (just kidding)

Sorry, Shark. You didn't quite make the cut

But going forward, the only three Giants numbers in the 20's that can be worn are 23, 26, and 29. Currently, those numbers are worn by Giants manager Tony Vitello who chose 23, 26 by Matt Chapman, and 29 by Luis Matos.

Of course, when the Giants win the next four World Series titles and Chapman and Matos alternate winning the NL MVP every year then no Giants player will ever wear a number in the 20's again.

In all seriousness, it is remarkable that so many great Giants players have donned a number in the 20's and they may very well run out someday.
