SF Giants are already completely bungling the development of Bryce Eldridge

What are they doing?

When the SF Giants called up top prospect Bryce Eldridge a week ago, the expectation was that he would be playing a lot. Everyone knew it would be tough to get him into the lineup every day especially with how hot Casey Schmitt has been, but Eldridge is out of the lineup yet again on Monday night.

Manager Tony Vitello said ahead of Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers that Eldridge will primarily be coming off the bench according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

This comes after Eldridge was also left out of the lineup on Sunday, a move that our own Jeff Young described as mind-boggling. He has sat in three of his last four games and the one game he started he hit his first career home run.

It makes no sense what the Giants are doing with Bryce Eldridge

Eldridge has been far from dominant since he was called up. He has just two hits in his first 14 at-bats and he's struck out five times while walking once. But if the Giants were not prepared to start him at least every other day then what were they thinking by calling him up?

We all knew it was going to be a tough fit trying to squeeze him into the lineup every single day. The Giants have a ton of money committed to Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers so third base, shortstop, and first base were already spoken for. Schmitt has done great as the DH and Luis Arraez has been exceptional at the plate and defensively at second base so it seemed clear the only way the Giants were going to get him into the lineup was by giving veterans days off every now and then.

The Giants did that early on by benching Chapman for a game and starting Schmitt at third and then benching Adames for a game and having Schmitt start at shortstop. But if the Giants were not prepared to do that consistently then why bring up Eldridge in the first place?

He should be getting regular at-bats no matter what. He's better served starting every day in Triple-A than riding the pine and coming in cold off the bench late in games for the Giants. Plus, who is he going to pinch hit for? Vitello pinch hit for Schmitt with Eldridge which did not make a ton of sense. Schmitt is hot enough to be starting over Eldridge but you're still going to sub him out for the rookie late in the game?

It doesn't make sense and it seems like the Giants are already doing everything they can to screw up Eldridge's development. How the Giants develop their prospects has been a real point of contention for some time and it will continue to be so if they keep operating in such an illogical fashion.
