SF Giants agree to significant bonus with 2026 12th-round pick

The SF Giants have locked up many of their picks from this year's draft. This includes 12th-round pick Josiah Kemp, who agreed to a $400,000 signing bonus to begin his career with the SF Giants.

The Giants also agreed to a large signing bonus with 13th-round pick Colin Fisher. He earned a $300,000 signing bonus. Fisher had a chance to return to school for another year, so he had leverage in his favor.

One note about some of these bonuses. The reported amount might differ slightly based on the source. There can be a $2,500 contingency bonus added on top of an agreed amount. This does not count against the bonus pool. For example, Kemp's reported bonus shows up as $397,500 on Baseball America, but the contingency bonus is added on top to round it out.

There are no slot values after the 10th round. Teams can offer players a signing bonus of up to $150,000 without it counting against the bonus pool. For Kemp, he adds about $250,000 to the team's bonus pool.

SF Giants land one of the more difficult signings in this year's draft class

When the Giants drafted Kemp, it was viewed as a hard signing. The right-handed bat committed to the University of Oklahoma, so the Giants needed to sway him from that commitment. He was regarded as one of the better prep players in this year's draft class and received a signing bonus that is comparable to a fifth-or-sixth-round pick.

Signability was one of the reasons why Kemp was available in the 12th round. Teams usually plan to reserve some bonus pool space to land a hard-to-sign player later in the draft. For the Giants, Kemp was one of those players.

Kemp is a good athlete with a solid feel for contact. There is hope that he adds more power to his swing as he matures.

Of course, Kemp is the nephew of longtime outfielder and division rival Matt Kemp. The Giants leaned heavily on MLB bloodlines in this year's draft. Kaden Waechter, Peyton Bonds, Luke Nixon, and Kemp are all relatives of former big league players. Even the Giants' 16th-round pick, Dalton Wentz, is the son of a former pro baseball player.

The Giants will now turn their attention to the rest of the draft class. Waechter and Carson Bolemon remain unsigned, along with a couple of players selected later in the draft. The deadline for teams to sign their picks is July 27.
