SF Giants add backstop on a minor league deal out of the Pioneer League

The SF Giants added some catching depth in the lower minors. According to the team's transaction log, they have signed backstop Charlie Muniz and assigned him to the Eugene Emeralds.

In a bit of an unusual outcome, the Giants did not select a catcher in the draft. Teams often use at least one pick for a catcher to give them potential depth coverage down the road.

They will need that depth, especially when they head into the offseason. Both Onil Perez and Adrián Sugastey are slated to become free agents. There is a good chance that Andrew Knizner becomes a free agent as well. They will have Daniel Susac, Drew Cavanaugh, and Jesús Rodríguez at the top of the depth chart, and not a lot in between.

The Giants will need catching depth up and down the minors. While they did not add a catcher in the draft, they have brought in some new faces. Charlie Muniz is the second catcher they added on the undrafted free-agent market. Scott Gell also joined the organization over the summer.

Gell was signed out of Stony Brook University. On the other hand, Muniz is not entirely new to pro ball. He has spent parts of the past two seasons with the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League. Muniz also had a brief stint with the Lexington Legends of the Atlantic League in 2025.

Before that, the 24-year-old catcher spent four seasons at the University of the Cumberlands. That is an NAIA program in Kentucky. He put up impressive numbers, slashing .415/.495/.880 with an 11.3 percent walk rate, 11.7 percent strikeout rate, and .465 ISO. He reached at least 20 home runs in three of those seasons.

With the Mustangs, the right-handed bat continued to put up strong numbers. In 2026, he posted a 1.126 OPS with 27 home runs and 106 RBI in 428 plate appearances.

Muniz joins an Emeralds roster that is gearing up for a championship run. The Giants just promoted Onil Perez to Double-A, so there is a need for catching help. Daniel Rogers had split time with Rogers. Presumably, he should see an uptick in playing time following the promotion.
