SF Giants 2026 top pick reportedly set to join San Jose, begin pro career

Jackson Flora could begin his pro career as soon as this week. According to Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle, the SF Giants are planning to assign the 2026 top pick to the San Jose Giants.

Technically, Flora has already begun his pro career. He made one of his first appearances in a Giants uniform during the Bridge League over the weekend. Jason Pennini of Baseball America (subscription required) shared his thoughts on how Flora looked on the mound while getting a glimpse of Joniel Hernandez, who has already moved stateside after the Dominican Summer League concluded last week.

The Giants went into the draft with a clear need for pitching. They hope that they augmented that in a big way with the selection of Flora, followed by Carson Bolemon and Kaden Waechter with the No. 29 and No. 55 pick, respectively.

The Giants also bolstered minor league pitching depth at the trade deadline. They added Ramon Marquez, Miguel Mendez, and Henry LaLane. Marquez is in the midst of a strong season and is now viewed as one of the top pitching prospects. The Giants also added Anthony Molina, who has pitched well in a limited showing this year.

Flora earned a signing bonus of just under $8 million to begin his pro career earlier in the summer. That was an underslot signing, but the Giants reallocated those savings to the rest of the class, including swaying Bolemon and Waechter away from their respective college commitments.

In this year's draft, Flora was widely viewed as the top pitcher available. He posted a 1.06 ERA with 133 strikeouts and 32 walks in 102 innings at UC Santa Barbara this year. In 2024, he was a college teammate of Giants farmhand Zander Darby. Darby recently earned a promotion to Double-A after giving the Sacramento River Cats extra coverage for a couple of games.

On the mound, Flora throws from a three-quarters arm slot. He flashes a mid 90's fastball that gets some late ride and carry through the zone. Flora pairs that with a mid 80's slider, low 80's sweeper, and an upper 80's changeup. The harder slider gets more two-plane movement, whereas the slower slider sweeps more across the plate.

The right-handed pitcher joins a San Jose Giants club that is preparing for a playoff run. He is set to face off against the Fresno Grizzlies this week.
