Matt Wilkinson made an impact before earning a promotion to Triple-A. He, along with Jordan Gottesman, took home Pitcher of the Week honors in the Eastern League and California League, respectively.
May had been a busy month for Wilkinson. He started the month in the Cleveland Guardians organization. In his final start with Cleveland, he faced off against the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
Before that series concluded, Patrick Bailey was shipped to the Guardians, with Wilkinson coming to the Giants in the deal. All he had to do was switch dugouts to join his new team.
The lefty pitcher posted a 2.40 ERA with 13 strikeouts and four walks in 15 innings with Richmond. This included seven shutout innings with three strikeouts and one walk against the Akron RubberDucks.
New SF Giants acquisition will now head to Triple-A after strong final outing with Richmond
Wilkinson earned the win in a 3-0 victory over Akron. They split that series. The new Giants acquisition will now head to Triple-A. Wilkinson throws from the left side with a low, three-quarters delivery and above-extension. His fastball sits in the low 90’s, but plays up due to the extension and riding action up in the zone. Wilkinson mixes in a slider and changeup as well, with the former being his go-to secondary. His profile leans more pitchability-over-stuff.
On the other hand, Jordan Gottesman continued a successful stretch in his first full season in pro ball. He was selected in the sixth round of the 2025 draft out of Northeastern University. The Giants cornered the market on that school, as they used three of their 18 selections on players from Northeastern University. The others were Cam Maldonado and Cooper McGrath in the seventh round and 18th round, respectively.
Gottesman has a 2.77 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 9.5 K/9, and a 3.15 SO/W rate in 39 frames for the San Jose Giants. Last week, they faced off against the Fresno Grizzlies in a six-game series.
Gottesman collected five shutout innings with seven strikeouts against only one walk. The Giants dropped that game by a score of 3-2, but rallied off four straight wins to take the series.
