Reactionary SF Giants fans once again claim Oracle Park has a glaring deficiency

Give it a break.

Every so often, reactionary SF Giants fans will call for Oracle Park to be changed and for Triples Alley to be removed. Oddly, this only happens when a Giants player hits a ball deep into right-center field and it gets caught. We don’t hear these demands too much when it happens to the other team.

Coincidentally, Bryce Eldridge did that very thing on Tuesday night as he crushed a ball into Triples Alley that would have been gone in every other park in MLB.

Almost before right fielder Corbin Carroll even caught the ball there were fans once again complaining about Oracle Park’s dimensions. It’s infuriating to see fans trash the ballpark immediately.

Reactionary SF Giants fans are forgetting the benefits of Triples Alley

Maybe one thing to keep in mind: if Triple’s Alley never existed then Matt Cain does not have a perfect game. The pitching and defense model the Giants employed to win three World Series in a span of five years likely would not have worked the same way.

Plus, two of the coolest offensive plays in the history of the team, the inside-the-park home runs from Angel Pagan and Patrick Bailey, likely do not happen unless the park is configured the way it is.

But yep, any time a guy hits one to Triple’s Alley and it gets caught then it’s a huge deficiency. Never mind the fact that opposing players get hurt by the stadium configuration as well. Also, with the Giants' pitching staff looking like it currently does do fans really want guys like Tyler Mahle pitching with the fences pulled in?

Those demanding that the fences be moved in seem to be forgetting that Oracle Park giveth and taketh away. While the short porch down the right field line doesn’t lead to a ton of homers because of the marine layer, there are still plenty of homers that sneak out in right field that probably wouldn’t be gone in a more conventional park.

But that’s part of the charm and beauty of the ballpark. It’s part of what makes Oracle Park special and unique. Fans who demand that Triples Alley be eliminated are just as insufferable as Boston Red Sox fans who demand the Green Monster get taken down every time there’s a double off the wall.

It’s just the most reactionary, annoying kind of fandom. Part of what makes baseball great is that every park is different. Giants fans who can’t embrace that and pretend that the Giants are the only team hurt by the dimensions of the park simply do not get it.
