Sunday is Star Wars Day at Oracle Park. It’s fitting because the new Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu was just released and the San Francisco Giants have a fun Grogu bobblehead giveaway at the park today.
The Giants and Star Wars are two of my favorite things so whenever they cross over I’m absolutely going to be on board. I’m lucky enough to be going to the game today so you can bet I will be there early to get my hands on one of those sweet bobbleheads.
The Giants were one of the first professional sports teams to have Star Wars tie-ins at games and now pretty much every MLB team has a Star Wars Day. It has now become a pretty huge event and San Francisco has had some awesome Star Wars-themed giveaways over the years.
Let’s rank five of the best Star Wars giveaways they’ve had at Oracle Park.
Ranking the best SF Giants Star Wars giveaways
5. Buster Posey Clone Trooper Bobblehead
Back in 2013 the Giants had a Buster Posey clone trooper bobblehead that had a removable mask to reveal Buster’s face. However, Posey’s bobble head was wearing orange and white armor which makes sense since they’re Giants colors, but that’s also the same armor worn by Commander Cody’s clone forces on Utapau who turned against the Jedi and tried to kill Obi-Wan Kenobi. Let's hope there is not an inhibitor chip implanted in Posey's brain that forces him to turn against the Giants when told to execute Order 28 by Emperor, er, I mean Commissioner, Manfred.
4. Logan Webb “Obi-Webb Kenobi” Bobblehead
"Obi-Webb" Kenobi is pretty clever and it’s cool to see Webb wielding an orange lightsaber, something rarely seen in the Star Wars universe outside of Star Wars Legends which is no longer considered canon. There were some orange-looking sabers in the Ahsoka TV show though so maybe Shin Hati is a Giants fan.
3. Yoda ears hat
In 2024 the Giants had a Yoda ears hat as the giveaway. Mmm, was a great success, I think it was. It may have had a green "SF" logo but it fits with those floppy green ears. Marketing wasn't allowed to advertise it this way for legal reasons, but rumor is wearing it increases your midichlorian count twofold.
2. Brandon Crawford Mandalorian Bobble Head
This bobblehead featured Giants great Brandon Crawford in some cool-looking black and orange Mandalorian armor. Of all the Giants players over the years whose personality is most similar to Din Djarin, the titular “Mandalorian” in the new film, it may well be shortstop Brandon Crawford. Like Djarin, he’s stoic and does not show much emotion but has a heart of gold. In Crawford’s case he’s also got some gold on the shelf in the form of four Gold Gloves.
1. Brian Wilson Carbonite
The Giants have obviously had a lot of great Star Wars giveaways over the years but it will be tough to ever beat Brian Wilson frozen in carbonite doing the arms-crossed celebration he’d do after recording a save.
It was one of the first sports-themed Star Wars collectibles and still stands up as probably the best. Wilson is an odd guy so it wouldn't surprise anyone if he had some sot of cryotherapy chamber that actually turned him into frozen carbonite like Han Solo. Wilson did sell off some of his World Series memorabilia last year so there's a chance he too has run up some debts with the Hutts.
For Giants fans who also love Star Wars, Sunday won’t get much better. To be a baseball nerd and a Star Wars nerd is a sacred thing so it will be my great privilege to combine those two nerddoms to the max on Sunday.
