SF Giants slugger Rafael Devers has understandably taken a lot of heat so far this season. He’s struggled a lot and questions are rising about how much he really brings to the team both offensively and on defense. It hasn’t helped matters that he’s reportedly been avoiding the media recently.
But while Devers is taking most of the heat from fans, his struggles have covered up for shortstop Willy Adames who has arguably been worse as of late.
Devers' struggles have made it easy to miss Adames' cold streak at the plate
Adames has been ice cold in his last seven games, recording just two hits in 33 at-bats while striking out 15 times. He’s been the team’s leadoff hitter for much of the year so to get that little production out of your table-setter is troubling to say the least.
On the year, Adames is hitting .207/.248/.378 with three home runs and six runs batted in. The hope is that he does not have the same rough first half he had last season. 2025 was his debut season with the Giants after signing a franchise-record contract so it was understandable that he’d have some struggles early on as he tried to impress a new team.Â
He rebounded in a huge way in the second half and even ended up breaking the Barry Bonds curse by hitting 30 home runs on the season.
As for Devers, he is hitting .213/.248/.296 with two home runs and nine runs batted in. He’s been striking out a ton and the frustrations are clearly starting to boil over.
The thing with both Adames and Devers is they are incredibly streaky hitters. When they get hot they can power a team like they did last season to help the Giants make a late-season push for the playoffs. But when they’re both cold like they are right now, the offense can be difficult to watch at times.
They’re both guys who have a lot of power yet swing and miss a lot. That style of hitter is frustrating to watch when they aren’t putting the ball in play, but the Giants have hundreds of millions of dollars tied up in them both so I guess we as fans are just going to have to get used to that for the rest of this decade and beyond.
Devers is taking the heat for now and while Adames is always a fun, positive presence no matter how well he is doing at the plate, it’s become hard to ignore his struggles. The Giants really need both guys to turn it around soon so this season can finally get motoring in the right direction.
