The SF Giants start their three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Friday night and it will be Rafael Devers’ long-awaited return to Fenway Park after the Red Sox dealt him to the Giants in June of 2025.
Expect an icy reception for Devers. Things did not exactly end all that well in Boston and the Red Sox have fared much better than the Giants since the trade so Boston does not seem to be missing him very much.
Sadly, it seems like Devers may not get a chance to play first base against his old team which would’ve been the perfect chance for him to troll the Red Sox since he very publicly refused to play first base when he was with Boston last year.
As Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic noted in a recent article, Devers has been dealing with a minor ailment as of late which has limited him to designated hitter duties. That’s probably not the worst thing as Bryce Eldridge seems to be the superior option defensively at first base, but it would have been so perfect for Devers to go out to first base just to hear those angry Boston fans boo their hearts out.
Maybe he can at least go out there for one inning in a blowout just as a minor troll. It’s the kind of season where all we have to get excited about is guys named “Tugboat” and trolling opponents.
Rafael Devers can still make Red Sox pay with his bat
Still, at least Devers should be able to hit against Boston. He hit his first home run as a Giant against the Red Sox last year so it would be pretty cool if he’s able to hit a homer in Fenway to earn a nice round of boos as he rounds the bases.
It certainly won’t be the same homecoming that Willy Adames got last year in Milwaukee when Brewers fans gave him a huge standing ovation ahead of his first at-bat. Some might applaud Devers though since he did help the team win a World Series back in 2018, but Boston is very much a “what have you done for me lately” sports town so expect the boos to drown out whatever small amount of applause there is.
While it would be cool to see Devers play first base against Boston, there’s no reason to put his health at risk in this lost season. Let’s hope he can at least have a huge series against them offensively to make them regret trading him just a smidge.
