When a team is as bad as the SF Giants were collectively it sort of feels like no one deserves an award. The Giants unsurprisingly had no Gold Glove nominees and really the only chance they have at an award is if Rafael Devers wins a Silver Slugger but he may not have done quite enough.
Devers would be the first Giant to win a Silver Slugger since Buster Posey back in 2021, but despite the valiant push he made towards the end of the season he may not have done quite enough to take home the hardware.
On the season, Devers hit .258/.340/.525 with 37 home runs and 98 runs batted in. Those numbers are impressive given how and he was in the first month of the season and the fact that he battled an injury throughout the season that ultimately shut him down and robbed him of a chance for 40 home runs and 100 RBI.
He finally became the dominant, feared slugger the Giants hoped they were getting when they swung the blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox for him in 2025. Yet, he may not have done enough to take down some of the other contenders for the NL Silver Slugger Award for first base.
Devers has some tough competition for NL 1B Silver Slugger
The winner of the award last year, which was announced by FanSided in cooperation with the Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award and is meant to identify the best offensive player at each position on the field as voted on by MLB managers and coaches, was Pete Alonso when he was with the New York Mets so Devers won’t have to compete with him since he’s now in the American League.
The remaining competition is still tough, though. Atlanta Braves slugger Matt Olson hit .251/.321/.502 with 41 homers and 93 runs batted in. Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman didn’t have the best year but he still hit a respectable .288/.362/.430 with 16 home runs and 70 runs batted in. Ty France of the San Diego Padres hit .295/.363/.502 with 21 homers and 72 runs batted in so he could be a dark horse candidate.
The fact that all those other players were on playoff teams could tip the scales in their favor potentially. We will see if Devers can come out on top but that rough April and the fact that he was on a bad team may prevent him from taking home his third career Silver Slugger.
