Rafael Devers' introductory SF Giants press conference provides huge sigh of relief

This press conference should assuage a lot of concerns.

The SF Giants introduced their new star slugger Rafael Devers on Tuesday after the team acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. His first remarks as a Giants provided a huge sigh of relief.

Devers was asked about what position he would want to play with the Giants or where he would be open to playing and he responded by saying that he will play wherever he is asked to play. Speaking through an interpreter, he said: "I'm here to play wherever they want me to play."

This is a great first impression to make with a new team. Devers gained a bit of a bad reputation in Boston when he publicly refused to play first base after the team already asked him to switch from being a third baseman to being the team's designated hitter.

Devers is going to be the DH for the Giants tonight and bat third, but manager Bob Melvin said that Devers is going to begin taking ground balls at first base and the plan is to work him in at first base once he gets more comfortable there.

This could lead one to speculate about the future of top prospect Bryce Eldridge since he is a first baseman, but Buster Posey said the plan is still for Eldridge to be a first baseman which means long-term, Devers will probably primarily be the team's DH over the course of his tenure in San Francisco.

The main takeaway from all of this should be that Devers is a team player who just wants to win. Naturally, there was going to be concern that he was a guy who is only in it for himself or who could start drama in the clubhouse, but Devers has put those fears to rest for now by answering the questions in his first press conference flawlessly.

This has got to be a huge slap in the face for Boston or may just reveal that Devers' true problems with the Red Sox went far beyond the position changes. Their front office has faced a lot more scrutiny as of late so maybe that is why Devers wanted out or was frustrated.

He adds a lot to a Giants lineup that has been sorely missing some extra firepower. He could end up being the guy to break the drought ever since Barry Bonds hit over 30 home runs for the Giants back in 2004. No Giant has done it since. Bonds was even in the front row of Devers' press conference which may be a very good omen.

But beyond what he brings to the table with the bat, it is clear the Giants are getting a guy who does not want to create drama, he just wants to hit and help the team win games no matter what. That is absolute music to the ears and bodes well for the team going forward.
