Watch two beloved SF Giants outfielders teach you how to play right field
This is a masterclass in how to play the position.
The SF Giants have had a good amount of stability at right field for the last decade or so. Hunter Pence was the everyday right fielder for roughly 5 years and Mike Yastrzemski has been the primary right fielder for the last 5 years.
Therefore, it makes a ton of sense that the two of them joined forces to discuss all of the intricacies of playing right field at Oracle Park in this awesome 20 minute long video. For any young outfielders out there playing or just for anyone who likes to nerd out on those fine details of the game, it is an absolute must watch.
You get to see both Yaz and Pence break down each of the key aspects of being a right fielder. Whether it is how to judge the notoriously swirling winds of Oracle Park or how to judge a line drive that is hit right at you, they cover it all in great detail.
Hunter Pence and Mike Yastrzemski teach you how to play right field
Pence was a great outfielder in his day. Even though he had that unorthodox style and wonky throwing motion, he was still an elite defender and made countless memorable plays while he was in a Giants uniform.
Similarly, Yaz has been a great defender with the Giants. He has seen time in center field where he has been solid, but he has really proven to be elite in right field. He is probably deserving of more praise defensively but may get overshadowed by players with more speed, a stronger arm, or better offensive numbers.
What Yaz talked about though is that defense is incredibly important. He talked about how his defense is the reason he is in the major leagues and how he understood as he started playing more and more competitive baseball that he lacked some of the physical gifts of other players. Therefore, he understood he would have to differentiate himself by doing all of the small things right like being a great fielder, being a really good baserunner, and always hustling.
We know that Hunter Pence was the exact same way. He hustled harder than anyone else on the field when he played. He would always bust his tail down the line even if it was a comebacker to the pitcher and that was a key part of his game that made him different from everyone else.
When you lack the physical gifts that others may have, you really learn that in order to beat the other side you have to outthink them and out-hustle them which both Pence and Yastrzemski personify.
If you have the time, please give the video a watch because it is definitely worth it. If you are younger and are playing baseball this video is absolutely essential and provides a good roadmap on how to play right field and just generally how to be a good ballplayer from two SF Giants fan favroties.
