The 2024 Willie Mac Award winner should be obvious for the SF Giants
This one should be pretty cut and dry.
The SF Giants are going to hand out their annual Willie Mac Award tonight. There are several good options for the winner, but it should be pretty obvious that the Giants will give the award to their star player Matt Chapman for his efforts this year.
The Willie Mac Award is given out every year to the most inspirational player on the Giants as voted on by the players, coaches, and training staff. The first award was handed out back in 1980. It is a prestigious honor that many great Giants have won over the years. In the last several years winner have included Mike Yastrzemski, Wilmer Flores, Thairo Estrada, and LaMonte Wade Jr.
SF Giants to give out Willie Mac Award tonight
This season the Giants have several great candidates.
Heliot Ramos has had a breakout season and has established himself as the left fielder of the future for the Giants. I doubt many fans had him becoming an All-Star at the beginning of the year, but it was a very welcome surprise. Him winning the award would be similar to when Matt Duffy won it back in 2015 as a young player who had a breakout year.
Tyler Fitzgerald would be another option for the team. He is another young player who has had a breakout year and could be the team's shortstop or second baseman next year.
Another candidate would be staff ace Logan Webb. He has yet to win the award but is certainly one of the leaders on the team. He has been an undisputed leader for several years now and his consistency on the mound has been remarkable. Webb would be a very deserving winner.
However, I think the favorite for the award has to be Matt Chapman. The fact that he has had such a great year for the Giants both on offense and on defense, which resulted in a sizable contract extension, makes him a very obvious candidate. He will be a leader on this team going forward and he has been a model of consistency for the team suiting up almost every day. Receiving this prestigious award would be a fitting way to cap off his great 2024.
Really, there are no bad options for the Giants this year. They could opt for a young breakout player or reward a consistent veteran. Chapman seems like the most obvious choice, but all of these players have been great for the team this year and will be key parts of the team's future.
