The SF Giants traded infielder Cavan Biggio to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for cash. Because he was on a minor league deal with the Giants he was eligible to be traded but we never got to see him in a Giants uniform.
Biggio is the son of Craig Biggio, the Hall of Famer who spent his entire 20 year career with the Houston Astros. The young Biggio has not enjoyed that same stability as he is now joining his fourth different team this season.
SF Giants get rid of Cavan Biggio in trade with the Atlanta Braves
Cavan Biggio began the year with the Toronto Blue Jays which is the organization that drafted him back in 2016. His numbers were not great with Toronto this year as he hit .200/.323/.291 with 2 homers and 9 RBI in 110 at-bats.
Biggio was traded to the Los Angeles Dodger in June and he struggled with them as well, hitting .192/.306/.329 with 3 homers and 10 RBI. The Dodgers designated him for assignment in August and shortly after that the Giants signed him to a minor league deal.
In 12 games with the Sacramento River Cats he had just 7 hits in 43 at-bats. Then the Giants traded him to the Braves.
It just seems that there was not much of a future for Biggio with the Giants. With rosters only expanding to 28 players, the Giants promoting him would have taken away time from Marco Luciano or other younger players that the Giants want to see develop.
They also have other players like Brett Wisely and Casey Schmitt who have versatility on the infield and can play multiple positions.
Biggio's big league future is uncertain. He showed a lot of promise earlier in his career. His rookie campaign saw him hit 16 home runs and 48 RBI but he has never been able to match that offensive production since then.
Perhaps on the Braves he can figure things out at the plate and find a spot on their big league roster in 2025. He is still just 29 years old so he has time to find his way.
