Well, if you managed to miss last night's SF Giants game, you were probably better off for it. They dropped a nail-biter against the Arizona Diamondbacks by a score of 17-1. San Francisco will look to Kyle Harrison to get them back into the win column.
SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Arizona Diamondbacks, April 20
Harrison has posted a 4.70 ERA through four starts. In his last outing against the Miami Marlins, he yielded three earned runs on eight hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.
The Giants have tasked the 22-year-old pitcher will throwing more consistently in the strike zone. He has seen improvement in that regard as he has tallied a 1.6 BB/9 rate in 2024. That number is encouraging, but it has led to a few too many location mistakes in the middle of the zone. Harrison has allowed five home runs in 23 innings so far.
That number does need to improve, but that should come with time. That said, the lefty pitcher has proven tough to hit when he does execute. Opposing hitters have posted just a .190 batting average against his four-seam fastball this season. He has thrown that pitch 67.4 percent of the time, but it feels like he needs to mix in another look or two.
Despite losing last night's game badly, the Giants did achieve a first for 2024. Jorge Soler blasted the team's first home run at Oracle Park. They went seven straight games at home without a long ball before Soler's homer on Friday night.
The Giants will face off against a tough opponent in Zac Gallen. The 28-year-old pitcher has a 1.64 ERA with 26 strikeouts against seven walks through four starts. It will be a tough matchup for the Giants.
