The Giants have had injuries galore recently. It seems like each series a new guy goes down with an injury. This past series saw Keaton Winn leave a game against the Dodgers due to forearm tightness. This is unfortunate since Winn has shown some really positive signs this season. In April he had four consecutive starts in which he went at least 5 innings and gave up 2 runs or less. May was less friendly to him as he failed to go beyond the 4th inning and gave up 5 earned runs or more in ever start. One can only hope it is not a serious injury.
The man called up to replace him is Mason Black. Black is a rookie that has only had two starts this season. His first against the Phillies was solid until he got roughed up in the 5th inning. His second start against the Reds was not masterful, but he pitched into the 5th and only gave up 1 earned run, giving the Giants a chance to win the game.
Casey Schmitt was sent down to Triple-A. This makes sense because despite a memorable walk off hit on Mother's Day, he just was not hitting. He only had 3 hits in 22 at-bats. We will probably see him again soon, especially with the team's injury luck lately.
The team also brought Jorge Soler back off the IL. The slugger was dealing with a shoulder injury and fortunately escaped serious injury when a ball ricocheted and hit his head during batting practice. Soler has not impressed so far this year. He has 5 home runs but only 8 RBI and his average is .202. Perhaps he can start doing more damage after his stint on the IL.
Black will start tonight's game and Soler will bat leadoff so they have a chance to make an impact right away.
