Today, the very unfortunate word came out that the San Francisco Giants' chief division rival, the Dodgers, got Shohei Ohtani to agree to an unfathomably large 10 year, $700 million deal. It is the largest contract not only in baseball history, but in the history of sports in North America. Why did it have to be the Dodgers?!
For some, they are just glad to know that Ohtani's free agency is finally over and the rest of the free agent market can actually start moving again. For others, they are mourning that their team didn't land Ohtani including Giants fans. However, there are a whole lot of people going "@#$@#$& that is a lot of money."
Well, they are not alone in thinking that as former Giants pitcher and current free agent Alex Wood weighed in on Shohei's deal as well.
Former SF Giants pitcher did not hold back when he heard about Ohtani's contract
First off, this reaction is hilarious and incredibly relatable. In fact, everyone who follows baseball probably just had at least one friend utter something very similar (or even more NSFW) once the news broke. If any contract is gonna make the expletives fly, it is going to be this one.
To put Ohtani's contract in context, over the course of Alex Wood's entire career, he has earned a little over $50 million. For us puny mortals, that is an obscene amount of money. However, for Shohei, that would only account for a little over 7% of what he is set to receive from the Dodgers over the next decade. Shohei is going to make more than Bryce Harper ($330 million) and Fernando Tatis Jr. ($340 million) combined on their current deals.
Sadly for the Giants, they have missed out on yet another star player and we will hopefully know soon as to how far they were willing to go to sign Shohei. However, for the moment, Alex Wood said it best, "holy shit lol".
