SF Giants fans set up for another free agent heartbreak this offseason

The SF Giants have made a habit of striking out on major free agents in each of the last two offseasons. If recent reporting is to be believed, it looks like they are going to make it three years in a row with a failed pursuit of Juan Soto.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Giants will most likely make a run at Juan Soto in free agency this offseason. Nightengale was very blunt with his assessment of the Soto sweepstakes: "He's signing with the New York Yankees or New York Mets, although the Toronto Blue Jays and perhaps San Francisco Giants will at least make an attempt."

Well, how about that. The Giants are likely to make a run at another big-time free agent. On the one hand, this is not surprising. The Giants are still searching for that star player for their organization and it seems pretty clear that an internal, homegrown superstar is not a reality at this time. But at this point why are the Giants even making runs at these guys anymore?

The SF Giants are going to waste more time chasing a superstar

Why not just level with the fans and admit that these massive free agents do not want to play for the Giants? No, it's not because San Francisco is some dystopia or because of high taxes or whatever other nonsense people want to spout. It is because the Giants are not a winning organization. They are a middling organization in search of an identity. That does not exactly look appetizing to these premier talents like Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, and Juan Soto who are thinking about what team they want to play the next 10 years for.

Oracle Park may also play a bit of a role in dissuading big bats due to it not being very hitter friendly. But if the Giants were perennial playoff contenders and World Series favorites like the Dodgers, something tells me that some of these big names would overlook that.

If the Giants are going to succeed in the future, it is going to be powered by their pitching. They need to have one of the best starting rotations in baseball so their energy would be better spent doing everything they can to retain Blake Snell rather than waste time talking to Soto at all.

Many Giants fans have been burned too many times to seriously believe that Soto is going to end up in San Francisco. But if the team does decide to make a fruitless push for him, it is only going to break the heart of the fanbase even more after much of it has resigned itself to the fact that this team just seems doomed to perpetual mediocrity.

Isn't this where...
