SF Giants ace proves team was right not to trade him with masterful shutout
Logan Webb proved yet again that he is the undisputed ace of the SF Giants staff.
The SF Giants needed a win in the worst way and they got it thanks to a masterful performance from Logan Webb with his complete game shutout against the Oakland A's last night. This proves the team was right to keep him on the team.
SF Giants ace proves team was right not to trade him with masterful shutout
Webb was incredible last night as he allowed 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6 batters in his complete game. The Giants needed it because they were only able to squeak out one measly run against our old friend Ross Stripling, who many fans will remember as that guy who got knocked around a ton last year.
Webb is no stranger to not getting a lot of run support. He did not let it phase him and he dominated against the team he grew up rooting for as a kid. That is what aces do and it is exactly what he delivered.
While Blake Snell was the starting pitcher just about everyone thought the Giants were going to trade before the trade deadline, it was not impossible that the Giants would have dealt Webb. We have no idea whether they received any calls on Webb or if they even entertained trading him, but if the team decided to go into full sell mode, they could have gotten a decent return on Webb since he has a few years left on his contract and is one of the most consistent pitchers in the game.
It would have sent a signal to fans that a full-on rebuild was coming which would have been disastrous for team and fan morale. Thankfully, the Giants did not end up trading Webb.
Webb is the undisputed leader of the team. He is probably the most liked player on the team and is coming off his first All-Star showing. He competes as hard as anyone else on the team and really takes it personally when the team is not living up to expectations. The Giants need a guy like that on the team and Webb is one of those few familiar faces on the team that even casual fans could name.
The more impressive thing is that Webb pitched this well coming off of several rough outings as well as a poor performance in the All-Star Game. He did not let those poor showings affect him as he went out and showed us the Logan Webb we have all become used to the last several years.
