SF Giants ace Blake Snell recorded the 18th no-hitter in franchise history against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. He was dominant and he had a very frank message for those who have been critical of him in the past for not going deep in games.
SF Giants ace Blake Snell has shut the critics up with no-hitter
Snell was absolutely dominant against the Reds on Friday. As far as no-hitters go, that was a fairly stressless one. Snell surrendered 3 walks but his stuff was so dominant all night that there was not even a huge defensive play to save the no-no like there typically is. That's just how good he was.
This start did not come out of nowhere, either. Snell had been building towards this for several starts now. For the past month or so he has looked like Snell at his most dominant. The same Snell who won two Cy Young awards. It was due to this resurgence after the rough start to the year that Snell's name was so prevalent as a potential trade candidate for the Giants.
At least for now, the Giants are very happy they did not trade Snell. If they are going to have any chance at making the postseason, then they will need the most dominant version of Snell for the rest of the season. Perhaps this no-hitter can even provide the Giants with badly needed momentum that can propel them for the rest of the season.
Snell obviously took a great amount of personal satisfaction in this no-hitter. Not only was it the first no-hitter of his career, but it was also his first time even making it into the 9th inning in a start. His inability to go deep into games is something that was always a concern with him, so it must feel good for him to shut those critics up for now.
When asked after the game about what it was like to have his first complete game, shut out, and no-hitter, he said: "They can't say it anymore. Complete game. Shutout. No-hitter. Leave me alone." You know it has to feel good for him to get the monkey off his back.
Snell has been great for the Giants as of late and even if he ends up playing for another team next season he has given Giants fans an incredible memory and perhaps he has given the Giants the spark they need to make a genuine push for the postseason.
