The Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants are both locked in the National League Wild Card race and the Reds are losing ground. San Francisco has taken the first two of this three-game series at Oracle Park and they now hold the final Wild Card spot at 69-63, two games ahead of the Reds who are 68-66 and the second team out.

The Reds need to salvage a game in this series and for the finale they’ll send Hunter Greene to the mound. Greene is 2-6 with a 5.06 ERA in 16 starts and is making his third start in August after missing time with an injury. The Giants will counter with 9-10 Logan Webb who has a 3.51 ERA in 27 starts.

The Reds have lost three straight games and are underdogs on the road in Game 3 of this series. I’ll give my pick for this one, but no matter what you want to bet on in this matchup, you can do it in the DraftKings Sportsbook. Reds vs. Giants odds, run line and total

Reds vs. Giants prediction and pick

Hunter Greene’s return to the mound on August 20 against Toronto, did not go as planned. He gave up nine runs on 10 hits in 3.0 innings with five home runs allowed. That brought his home run total on the year to 14 in 16 starts which is still lower than expected considering he is in the sixth percentile of hard hit rate. Greene was better last time out against the Diamondbacks, but it still wasn’t good. He gave up five runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.

It doesn’t seem like there’s any possible way to trust Hunter Greene at the moment. Sure, his numbers for the season like his 4.45 FIP and 4.05 xERA say he should experience some positive regression, but since returning from injury he’s been a disaster, so I have to disregard the season long sample size. The Reds as a team have a 5.23 ERA in August which ranks 23rd.

The Giants rank 10th in team ERA this month at 4.19 and have one of the best bullpens in baseball. They just won’t need to go to that bullpen much today. Logan Webb struggled last time out, but he has a 3.35 FIP and 3.71 xERA which are both very solid. He is at 174.1 innings this year which is second in the MLB.

Webb will bounce back, but I can't say the same for Hunter Greene. I’m taking the Giants to win big with the Reds are 9-17 so far this month.
