The SF Giants have signed free agent third baseman Matt Chapman to a three-year deal. The move bolsters both the offense and the defense, but no one will be happier about the Chapman signing than the ace of the staff Logan Webb.

Chapman brings a sterling reputation as one of the game's premier defensive third basemen. He has won four Gold Gloves in his career, which bolsters the defense of the Giants after a year in which their defense struggled.

Perhaps, no one on the Giants roster is happier about the Chapman signing than Logan Webb. As one of the premier ground ball pitchers in all of MLB, he will be absolutely thrilled that the Giants now have such a solid defender at the hot corner.

As ESPN's Buster Olney notes, Webb has a 3-to-1 ground ball to fly ball ratio. When the ace of your staff puts the ball on the ground at such a high rate, it is essential to have a solid defense behind him.

Now, the Giants have solid defenders at first base in LaMonte Wade Jr., second base in Thairo Estrada, and third base in Chapman. Shortstop is still a question mark as the favorite, Marco Luciano, has some question marks with his glove. Having Chapman on the left side of the infield to help cover more ground will certainly help, though.

Not only will Webb be happy about this, but so will the rest of the team's pitching staff. Pitchers like Alex Cobb, Jordan Hicks, and Tyler Rogers will especially be pleased since they all feature sinkers that they rely on heavily.

The signing of Chapman could also be an enticing move for the best free agent still on the market: left-handed ace Blake Snell. Even though Snell is more of a strikeout/fly-ball pitcher, he would feel better about having a guy with 4 Gold Gloves playing behind him.

Chapman brings value with his bat as well, but this move does a lot to make the Giants better defensively and will likely boost the morale of the pitching staff which will have much more confidence now that Chapman is on the team.
