Veteran starter Marcus Stroman is off to a strong start with the New York Yankees after inking a two-year, $37 million pact in the offseason. However, they were not the only interested team as Jon Heyman of the New York Post confirms that both the SF Giants and San Diego Padres made offers as well.

This is hardly surprising given that the Giants expressed serious in the right-handed hurler after the 2021 season. He signed with the Chicago Cubs on a two-year deal with a player option for a third season.

During his time with Chicago, Stroman registered a 3.73 ERA while making at least 25 starts in each of the past two seasons. He earned an NL All-Star nod in 2023 and declined his player option for 2024 in favor of free agency.

The righty pitcher had a long track record of durability and performance. Through his first nine seasons, he registered a 3.65 ERA, 3.63 FIP, 1.25 WHIP, 7.5 K/9, and a 2.90 SO/W ratio while making at least 25 starts in six different seasons.

Plus, the 32-year-old has induced a ground ball in 56.7 percent of batted ball events. Given the Giants' affinity for ground ball pitchers, San Francisco felt like a logical landing spot.

According to Heyman, Stroman was weighing two-and three-year offers from the Giants. On the other hand, the Padres were offering a longer-term deal with a lower annual value. Through three starts, Stroman has a 2.12 ERA with the Yankees.

The Giants cast a wide net for starting pitching help with winter. They were able to rebuild the rotation with additions like Jordan Hicks, Blake Snell, and Robbie Ray. The Hicks move is already paying early dividends. Plus, the farm system is beginning to augment the rotation with young pitchers like Kyle Harrison and Landen Roupp.

The Giants' starting rotation has some length to it now with all of the offseason moves. Stroman would have made sense as well, but Giants fans are happy about the moves that the team made.
