Is history repeating itself?

The SF Giants lean heavily on their catcher Patrick Bailey. He brings value on both offense and defense, but his offensive numbers are starting to fall in the second half just like last year. Is this going to be a repeat of 2023?

Patrick Bailey's offensive numbers are starting to drop like 2023

It can be difficult for any player to sustain their offensive numbers throughout a season. 162 games is a lot. As injuries pile up and the summer heat comes along, it is more than understandable why players might have a dip in production.

This is especially true when it comes to catchers. Having to be in the squat for so many games can lead to a lot of physical and mental fatigue especially when you also have to manage a big-league staff and call games. That is why it is so valuable having one of the best defensive catchers in the game in Bailey.

Bailey is no slouch on offense either. He has 7 home runs and 36 RBI on the season which is respectable for a catcher. However, he is showing signs of a dip in his offensive numbers which is exactly what happened last year in his rookie season.

Last season, his batting average at the end of June was .322 and he was looking very confident at the plate. His offensive numbers fell off a cliff the rest of the year though, and he finished with a batting avergae of .233.

2024 seems to be following a familiar script. At the All-Star break, Bailey's slash line was .283/.354/.430. Now, his slash line has plummeted to .256/.326/.379 and he only has 8 hits in his last 55 at-bats.

Now, this could just be a natural slump. Every hitter has hot and cold streaks throughout a season. But it could be that Bailey is simply worn out and fatigued just like last season. The Giants rely on him so much behind the plate that they try to limit his number of days off. He is very valuable behind the plate, but because he is back there so often it may be affecting his hitting.

The Giants may try to do more of what they did on Sunday by having Bailey in the DH spot. With Jorge Soler gone, they have more flexibility with that spot in the lineup so they can keep Bailey in the lineup but give his legs a little bit of a breather.

Bailey is one of the best players on the Giants, but we could be seeing him on his way to another second half slump. They are going to need his best on both offense and defense if they are going to make the postseason, so we should hope that this is just a slump at the plate and not a sign that he is worn out with a little less than two months to go in the season.
