The National League Wild Card race is heating up and the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants are right in the middle of it. Arizona is slipping back a bit at 56-50 while the Giants hold the top Wild Card spot at 58-48. San Francisco can maybe even bury Arizona in the four-game series, but the Diamondbacks could always climb right back into contention.
For the first game of this series, the Giants will go with Alex Cobb and the Diamondbacks will turn to Ryne Nelson. Cobb is 6-3 with a 2.97 ERA in 19 starts this season and Nelson is going into his 22nd start at 6-5 with a 4.97 ERA.
The Giants are lead home favorites coming off a series win against Boston. Let’s get into the odds.
Diamondbacks vs. Giants odds, run line and total
Diamondbacks vs. Giants prediction and pick
This month hasn’t been the best for the Diamondbacks. The team's bats have fallen off a good bit especially with Lourdes Gurriel Jr posting a .465 OPS this month. Arizona is 27th in runs scored in July, but that’s still three spots higher than the Giants who are dead last for the month.
Offensively the Giants have fallen off much more than the Diamondbacks, but they’ve been able to win behind great pitching. The Diamondbacks have not gotten that. In fact, their arms have been worse than their bats. Arizona’s pitching staff posted a 5.67 ERA in July and that ranks 29th in baseball. Nelson didn’t really help the cause much with two blowup starts mixed in.
As a staff, the Giants were top 10 in ERA and Alex Cobb was excellent last time out. Cobb went six scoreless against Oakland with nine strikeouts to just one walk and he’ll lead San Francisco to another win today. The lack of trustworthy hitters for the Giants right now is a concern, but at least they can rely on Alex Cobb and their pitching staff.
