We’re getting near the point in the MLB season where teams have to decide if they’re actually going to compete. It looked like the San Francisco Giants were going to be in the mix, but after two straight losses to the Chicago Cubs at home they are back at .500, 32-32. The Cubs are 28-36 and have climbed out of last place in the NL Central.

For the series finale in San Francisco, the Cubs will hand the ball to Hayden Wesneski who is 2-2 with a 4.72 ERA. The Giants counter with John Brebbia who has spent most of the year in the bullpen, but is making his seventh start. Brebbia is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA.

Here are the odds for the Cubs and Giants at Oracle Park today.

Cubs vs. Giants odds, run line and total

Cubs vs. Giants prediction and pick

The Chicago pitching staff has been great in this series and very good so far in June. They are fourth in MLB with a 3.96 ERA with only 25 runs allowed which is third. They had a shutout yesterday and allowed two runs on Friday. It’s a good matchup against the Giants who have a .688 team OPS this month with just four total home runs.

The Giants bullpen has a 4.09 ERA this season and they’ll be forced to carry the load again today after relying on Brebbia, Jakob Junis and Sean Manaea to navigate the nine innings yesterday. Brebbia will be an opener again today and it’ll be tough for the rest of the Giants bullpen to do that again in back-to-back days.

Wesneski has a 5.64 FIP to go along with his 4.72 ERA which indicates that some regression could be coming. He is accustomed to some blowup starts like seven runs over 5.0 innings on May 13 in Minnesota. This could be a spot for another rough one. Last time out he allowed four runs, two of them earned. His last two starts on the road have been rough and I’m fading him and the Giants bullpen in this spot.

The Cubs staff has been strong in June, but I’m fading them in this spot and taking the over.
