It’s been a challenging month for the San Francisco Giants who are 55-47 after a win over the Oakland Athletics yesterday.
They haven’t been able to put up many runs, but yesterday two was enough in a 2-1 win over 28-75 Oakland.
Tonight, the A’s will hand the ball to Hogan Harris to make his sixth start and 12th appearance of the season. Harris has a 2-4 record and a 6.11 ERA.
The Giants will counter with 4-4 Alex Wood who has a 4.99 ERA in 15 appearances, 11 of those were starts.
Let’s get into the odds for the battle of the bay area.
Athletics vs. Giants odds, run line and total
Athletics vs. Giants prediction and pick
Hogan Harris is not very good, but he is a lefty and right now that’s good enough against the Giants.
In July, the Giants scored the fewest runs in baseball with just 63 in 20 games and are last in the league with a .611 OPS.
Believe it or not it’s been even worse than that against left-handed pitching. Just against lefties this month they are 29th, but with a .551 OPS despite five home runs which is 16th against lefties over that stretch.
The Giants are struggling badly in July and while the A’s have an abysmal pitching staff, any lefty is a good matchup for San Francisco.
Wilmer Flores is their saving grace with his 1.219 OPS this month and great numbers against lefties. Other than him they have very little run production.
Brent Rooker is good against lefties like Alex Wood, but he’s not nearly as effective as he was early in the season. He’s falling off in a huge way with just an .846 OPS.
That’s still good, but it is a far cry from the damage he was doing to left-handers in the spring. With the Giants ice cold offensively I’ll happily take the under after a 2-1 game yesterday.
