If you win, the free agents will come.

SF Giants fans may be annoyed that the team keeps losing out on top free agents. The latest instance was Roki Sasaki opting to not come to San Francisco. Buster Posey knows there is only one true way to make the Giants an attractive destination.

Posey, the president of baseball operations, was interviewed recently by Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard on his podcast The TK Show. The interview can be viewed below:

Buster Posey has clear understanding of how SF Giants will land big free agents

At around the 8-minute mark in the video, Kawakami asked Posey about the Giants missing out on Sasaki and how the Giants can start to land high-profile free agents. Posey's response was interesting and makes a lot of sense:

"The obvious answer is...we've got to take care of business on the field going forward. I think you're in a better position if you go in and make a deep run in the playoffs, it's going to be attractive. To me where the focus has to be is, let's look at 2025 what's in front of us and go take care of business on the field and then we'll be in a good spot."

It is true that the Giants have the money to go after and land big free agents. The sad fact is that they are not viewed as a contender at this point. Why would Sasaki join the Giants when there are three teams better on paper in the NL West, two of which are also in California.

If the Giants can start to make the playoffs with some regularity, that could make them more attractive to free agents. Players don't go to the Dodgers just because they have an insane amount of money but it is also because they are a perennial contender. The Giants are not at that point yet.

This is why it has been argued that the Giants made an error by not going on a spending spree following the 2021 season when they won the NL West and made the playoffs. Instead, their major moves that offseason were to sign Carlos Rodon to what ended up being a one-year deal and Joc Pederson. They did not land San Francisco native Marcus Semien or bring back Kevin Gausman after he had a great 2021 for the team.

Yet, the past is the past. All the Giants can control now is the future and trying to position themselves the best they can to land big players in free agency. Like Posey said, if the team can make the playoffs in 2025 or at least create the impression that they are a team on the rise, that will make them much more attractive going forward to the premier free agents who have often eluded them.
