SF Giants outfielders Joey Wiemer and Wade Meckler were designated for assignment in the middle of December. However, their statuses remain unresolved as the waiver wire was on pause during the holidays. That should change soon enough.
Pair of SF Giants outfielders remain stuck in DFA limbo
Wiemer was designated for assignment to make room for Jason Foley. Foley underwent shoulder surgery in May of 2025. That is expected to keep him on the shelf through the middle of the 2026 season.
The 60-day injured list cannot be used until spring training begins, so Foley needs to occupy a spot on the 40-man roster. The same is true for Randy RodrÃguez, who underwent Tommy John surgery at the end of the season. That will likely keep him out for the entire 2026 campaign.
Foley agreed to a one-year deal with the Giants. He is still eligible for arbitration for two more seasons after this one. If he performs, the Giants can retain him at a bargain rate. If not, he can be non-tendered next offseason.
The Giants sent cash to the Miami Marlins to acquire Wiemer. He is a capable defender at all three outfield positions and has put up a .779 OPS in his career against left-handed pitching. That type of profile could have led to a role with the Giants, but they went in a different direction.
Similar to Wiemer, Wade Meckler's status is in limbo. He was placed on waivers to make room for Adrian Houser. Houser agreed to a two-year, $22 million pact. This includes a club option for a third season. If that club option is exercised, Houser could earn $30.5 million over the next three seasons.
The Giants originally drafted Meckler in the eighth round of the 2022 draft out of Oregon State University. He had a meteoric rise through the minor league system that led to a brief stint with the Giants that year. During that stint, he struggled to a .578 OPS in 64 plate appearances.
Due to injuries and performance, Meckler remained with the Sacramento River Cats over the past two seasons. The Giants lightly experimented with the idea of using him at second base, but he only made a handful of starts there with Sacramento.
While Wiemer and Meckler are in DFA limbo, their statuses should be resolved soon enough. With the holidays over, that unofficial pause on waivers should be lifted this week.
